THE START
On January 1st, 2021, a new law was enacted requiring hospitals in the United States to provide clear, accessible pricing information online about the items and services they provide. The law requires hospitals to release pricing data in machine readable files for the range of services mentioned above. They are also required to share at least 300 shoppable services or as many as they provide.
This was the birth of Procedure Pricer as a start-up. Procedure Pricer is a search tool to display the data in a way that is helpful for users. Procedure Pricer's mission is simple. bring accessibility and transparency to hospital pricing. by aggregating hospital standard charge sheets for hospital systems across the U.S.
THE GOAL
Our goal was to redesign the website and expand its scope in order to make the site more accessible for users.

old Website Design

THE PROBLEM
Transparency comes with a price, with this sort of database users always end out with thousands of irrelevant results which are not only confusing to the user but  took a long  time to load.
RESEARCH
Our research was centered around three central points. The first was to greater understand the world of price transparency and what the prices mean. The second was to focus on other sites that deal with large amounts of data that need to be organized in a way that is accessible for the user. Finally, we wanted to utilize a survey to better understand our users and what they would need out of this sort of database.
Research Findings
After completing our research, we decided to focus on three main foundational features for the new Procedure Pricer design. In order to create an experience that could be helpful to users, our focus narrowed in on: pricing information, hospital location, and ratings.
We also had to remain realistic when creating the site as the data being released was quite exhaustive and more important in getting estimated prices, not exact prices.

SOLUTION
Designing an improved comprehensive search system that allows “Procedure Pricer '' Users to narrow down the results based on three key attributes: pricing, location, and rating. Which result in focussed, direct and clear access to results that are applicable. Additionally, Procedure Pricer  now includes a rating system that responds to CMS hospital ratings and user ratings.
USER TESTING
- 100% of the users found the new design very clear and professional
- During the user test some typo error and an icon size or placement issue was found “Fixed”.
- Requesting more data about the procedure was confusing.
NEXT STEPS
- Implementing a compare feature that will allow users to compare hospitals and procedures in a more succinct way.
- The ability to upload itemized receipts in order to give users the opportunity to compare their bills to the prices released by the hospitals.
- Expanded client portal to create a personalized experience.
